If we had a dollar for every time we’ve heard this one! The fact is that many projects and investment initiatives fail to deliver the original promise - and, often, the reasons are lost in the ‘fog’ of the change process. Sometimes this is legitimate fog and stuff happens — things become more complex than expected, and the world doesn’t stand still whilst one organization makes a new change. The competition is also changing, the economy is changing, technology is changing. So what’s the answer? Well, the truth is that, because the world doesn’t stand still whilst you comfortably implement your investment project, the outcomes will most likely differ from your original intent. The key is to minimize this ‘drift’ and, crucially, to understand that this is occurring at the time it happens—not months or years later when the results are reviewed. This knowledge allows the Change Leader to make decisions. Decisions on which alternative path to pursue, decisions on changes to the plan, to resources, to funding etc. And, in some extreme circumstances, to decide whether to pause or stop the program.
